Spotlight on Black History Month!
February is Black History Month and we have many celebratory events planned here at RMS! Celebrating Black history this month promotes awareness and respect for the contributions and accomplishments of African Americans. This month, students will have chances to reflect on the incredible journey of 400 years -- from the shameful days of slavery to the momentous election last year of the first African-American president of the US.
Here are some of the activities planned:
Classroom lessons on Black history topics A writing contest on hip hop culture open to all students Featured Black hero on daily announcements Music in the mornings Resources page -- check it out!
In February, we celebrate the birthdays of founding fathers George Washington and Abraham Lincoln -- men whose vision, forethought and determination helped shape our nation. We also celebrate the accomplishments of the African-American men and women whose vision, forethought and determination also helped shape our nation.

ARC Donation Drive During Conferences!
8th grade AVID will be sponsoring an ARC donation drive during conferences. The blue ARC truck will be in our parking lot to accept donations of gently used clothes, toys, jewelry, and other small household items. Thanks so much for your support!
Civil War Songs!
Students in Ms. Holm's seventh grade social studies class have spent the last month studying the Civil War-the causes, the people, battles and outcomes. Students were able to pick from a list of ideas to make a project to show their knowledge of an aspect of the Civil War. One of the options was to create a rap about the battles. Click here to hear their final products-Enjoy!

H1N1 Alerts
At RMS, as with the entire district, we will be following the recommendations of the CDC and the Minnesota Department of Health relating to Influenza-like Illness which includes H1N1.
Please follow these steps to assess the health status of your child. Does your child have: a fever, 100 degrees or greater, a sore throat, a cough? If your child has fever AND one or two of the other symptoms, keep your child at home because of an influenza-like illness. The current recommendation is that children stay home at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever without the use of fever reducing medicine like Tylenol, Motrin, etc. In most cases this will be 5 - 7 days.
If your child has been diagnosed by a healthcare provider with a different disease - such as strep - follow your healthcare provider's recommendation.
Remind your children to wash hands often with soap and water and cover all coughs and sneezes in a clean tissue or into an elbow. Do not cover a cough or sneeze with your hands!
Please do not bring H1N1 back to school!
The Minnesota Department of Health website is a good resource for more information. Check the CDC and MDH websites to learn how to care for a person with flu symptoms at home and when to seek medical attention.
